I don't think I ever told the story of how I went with a neighbor to the tree lighting ceremony back in 2005. We had lived here maybe a week, and my neighbor said "You HAVE to go!" It was 5 hours of standing around in a huge crowd for 5 minutes of ooh, and ahh when the tree was lit. There were performances, but we were not close enough to see any of them, and we got there at 4pm that day. The festivities were scheduled to start at 7pm. The kids look back on it as something to NEVER do, along with things like Times Square at New Year's Eve, and the Thanksgiving Day Parade. The stuff they show on TV is better.
So why am I telling you about something that happened 5 years ago? Well, I decided today to go to see the Rockefeller Christmas Tree today. The last Saturday before Christmas. Am I crazy? I think so. The crowds were so not worth even going. Every corner there was a bottleneck of people who did not know where they were going, and they would stop in the middle of the sidewalk. I know that tourists are a good thing, but this is why I stay out of midtown, because this is where they all are. This is also why I started this website, to get people out of midtown and find other boroughs to visit, other fun stuff to do. That way I can enjoy midtown without the crowds...
So without further ado, drumroll please....the tree...
Now, we didn't just go to see the tree, we also went to see some gingerbread houses at Le Parker Meridian Hotel at 119 West 56th Street, in the lobby. There are 6 different ones, all based on movies made in NYC. My favorite one was the Ghostbusters one. We also went to a gallery in Chelsea to get a puzzle piece, but I'll explain that in my next post in more detail. It deserves it's own post, it is just THAT cool.
Now, I am going to go and put my feet up for a bit...
