Last night, Saturday the 7th, was the first Saturday of April, and was also the one night a month that the Brooklyn Museum is free. Sponsored by Target, Target First Saturdays make it possible for many to come in for free from 5 to 11 pm. And when I say many, I mean many. I am glad I went because I know that it will be worth it to pay to get in an leisurely look around when there are not so many crowds. There were many events planned, Gallery talks, Hands on Art, performances, a dance party, and there was a DJ there from 8 to 10, and from 5 to 7 there was an art punk band there, The Library is on Fire.
This was on the first floor of the museum, by the line for the elevator. So we took the stairs up to the third floor.
We walked around a bit, and then asked a docent where the Keith Haring exhibit was. Fifth floor, so we took the elevator up and got to wait in line for about a half hour, winding around some really cool sculptures and furniture.
Then we got into the exhibit. Really cool, worth the wait. But I will be going back to walk around more when I don't feel as rushed. There were a lot of penises in the drawings, but anyone who knows his work will not be surprised by this. I managed to get some non penis pictures.
So the Brooklyn Museum is definitely worth the trip out to Brooklyn. Granted, I live in Brooklyn, so the trip was not that bad for me. An easy train ride out on the 2 train, getting off at the Eastern Parkway/Brooklyn Museum stop. The cost of a ticket is $12 and kids under 12 are free. They are closed Mondays and Tuesdays. More info can be found at their website.
